The purchase may be the most significant in the history of TPL in Southern California, due to its size and the land’s geological complexity that attracts diverse wildlife ranging from California condors - the largest bird in North America - to mountain lions, reptiles and even bears. The land is adjacent to both the western edge of the Angeles National Forest and the Los Padres National Forest between Castaic Reservoir and Lake Piru and accessed from Halsey Canyon Road off the 5 Freeway.Ī field of buckwheat punctuates the view of the Hathaway/Temescal Ranch property near Castaic. The third phase - about 3,600 acres - brought the total purchase to 6,006 acres, the largest undeveloped private property in Los Angeles County, and now part of a protected ecological preserve. “This acquisition will help preserve biodiversity, expand outdoor access for Angelenos and sequester carbon as we combat climate change.” “This is a big deal,” said California Secretary for Natural Resources Wade Crowfoot in a prepared statement. “Standing in it, you wouldn’t know you were anywhere near L.A.” “I describe it as a time machine to old California,” said Paolo Perrone, project manager for Trust for Public Land (TPL) who worked on the purchase for seven years. The third and last phase of the purchase was completed last month by the Trust for Public Land and the property was then transferred to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), which manages the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and will manage this new preserve. The vast property sits on the borders of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and is being preserved along with two previous connected land purchases, the California Natural Resources Agency announced on July 7. The purchase is the third and final phase in an effort to create a vast preserve, that will now include the ranch just 40 miles west of downtown Los Angeles near Lake Piru and Castaic Reservoir. More than 6,000 acres of undeveloped ranch land known as the Hathaway/Temescal Ranch in north Los Angeles County has been purchased and protected for perpetuity by an environmental group with funding from California taxpayers, state officials have announced.
